Davido’s Warri controversy
Davido, a popular Nigerian Afrobeat singer, has denied claims that he was paid $94,600 to perform at the Warri Again show in Delta State, Nigeria, on October 6, 2023, but failed to show up. In a series of social media posts, Davido claimed that he told the show organizers months ago that he would not be attending the event, but they continued to use his name to advertise it.
Davido also assailed Amaju Pinnick, the former president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), who had criticized him for not being at the concert. Davido said that he is willing to donate twice as much to any football-related charitable organization as was paid to him if Pinnick can provide proof that he was paid.
Pinnick has not yet responded to Davido’s claims.
The controversy between Davido and Pinnick has sparked debates about the ethics of event organizers using artists’ names to advertise events without their permission, as well as the importance of artists honoring their contracts.
The controversy has also put a spotlight on the issue of non-refundable payments in the Nigerian entertainment industry. If Davido is able to prove that he told the show organizers months ago that he would not be attending the event, it is unclear whether he will be required to return the payment he received.
The outcome of the controversy will likely have a significant impact on the Nigerian entertainment industry. If Davido is found to be in breach of his contract, it could make it more difficult for artists to get paid in advance for their performances. On the other hand, if the show organizers are found to have used Davido’s name without his permission, it could make it more difficult for event organizers to book artists in the future.
